So I started the 21 day Raw diet Challenge based on the program offered from these fine folks at www.thegardendiet.com
I have of course made some alteration to the diet for many reasons- the availability of certain fresh things is one living in Saint John , NB. My strange schedule and other factors- I am using the key concepts of the garden diet, and staying RAW as much as possible- ( the only non-raw thing I have eaten was a little homemade babaganoush and one of those Ezekiel sprouted grains flat bread) but not vegan- I LOVE sashimi and raw oysters!- mainly avoiding anything cooked, packaged, no dairy, wheat, no land animals.I even been off beloved CHEESE for 3 weeks-!! something I said would NEVER happen!lol
It seems that my diet has been transitioning towards this for awhile now- in November I hosted the faboulous Asharah here in Saint john, she had a sensitivity to wheat that I had to take account for while I cooked for us. I just took her to get groceries with me and she could select what she needed- I kept pointing out things that I thought were Wheat free and the so weren’t! I ate the same thing as her for the 5 days she stayed with us before flying back to Berkeley, CA.- long story short I had the chance to observe how I felt without something that was a constant in my diet for pretty much my whole life. And I DID feel a difference a lightness in my body.
I teach 2-3 classes most days of the week and at least 1 class everyday of the week. So me and my body have come to know each other very well…….I can tell if the food im eating doesn’t have enough of what I need- ENERGY, NUTRIENTS, FRESHNESS!
just really going with the flo- and now to treat where the flo has led me with a little more intention, observing my appetite, body, and clarity of mind- paying closer attention documenting it-
It is recommended to keep a journal of when making a shift so you can look at what you wrote a few days or weeks or months ago- I have my own little “hardcopy joiurnal” that I carry with meto take notes- but I thought maybe sharing with others will keep me accountable and hopefully be helpfull to anyone else questioning their diet/ lifestyle. Trying to make more conscious decisions starting with diet- what im putting in to my body and trusting the process. All process’ take time and time shall always pass. You will always moves forward-
FOR BREAKFASTS :
I have been sticking my own morning ritual Smoothies- I dont have a fancy blender or food processor just a “Magic Bullet” that works great………….. I have used Isagenix shakes (cassein based) and also VEGA (vegan, plant protein based) shakesand now I am trying smoothies without suppliments common smoothie combos so far include:
**** ******NOTE: when I give measurements please remember that it is only a rough guide and that I eyeball everything or just use what I have at the time, it’s the best way to be creative in the kitchen!*************
Breakfast A)
1 Banana, 1/2 cup kale, add vanilla almond milk or water to top and blend.
Breakfast B)
1/2 cup frozn blueberries,2/3 cup Kale, water, blend. Also drank fresh juiced Grapefruit juice- which my daughter Ace loved too!
Breakfast C-
We Juiced 4 Oranges on a manual juicer and I made my daughter a half size smoothie 1/2 banana, 2/3 cup fresh squeezed orange juice w/pulp, topped with water . And for myself used one and a half bananas and the rest of the orange juice topped with water.
FOR LUNCH:
The past 3 days for lunch I have had a great big Salad with the following things, varying slightly each day
- 1/2- a full head of organic romaine
- 1 full tomato
- 1 med green pepper
- 1/2 cup hulled hemp hearts
- 1/2-1 avocado
- sometimes: raisins, pecans, macadamia nuts
- olive oil & a dash of sea salt
with and Ezekiel Sprouted grain flat bread. and today day 3 a Bartlett pear with a 1/2 dozen raw oysters! They had some beautiful looking Tuna at Superstore Rothesay avenue but could not sell it because they hadn’t priced it yet!! soo silly! I want it when it’s FRESH!! I didn’t get it unfortunately.
on Day 2 I had an Italian coffee made at home….it was an overcast day and the boost helped , but otherwise I have been a week away from coffee. Sometimes ya just NEED it- and it’s fine if MOST of the TIME you are making good decisions!
FOR DINNER:
Day 1: Raw scallops w/lemon, Siracha hot sauce. Salad pretty similar to the one above…and dessert was in a small glass dish 75% hemp hearts, 25% raisins, pecans. 1/2 tsp olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice.
Day2 : Massive salad same base as above mentioned salad- with extra hemp hearts, and 2 avocados. After Snacks include, 1 banana, 2/3 cup pecan & macadamia nuts, dried goji berries and raisins.
Day 3: 8-10RAW oysters, big salad, and tr to make vegan cream of celery soup- I dont have almonds though but I might use macadamia and try it- and try something cooked called CAVA NUEVA – meaning “naked oats” , some hearty looking rice I picked up my last trip to the Bulk Barn. Ill try this new Grain and mix in soaked Blackbeans, seasalt & onion.
During YOGA practice & teaching I have felt cleaner in my body and lighter if that makes any sense. Better focus, better balance, more clarity.
I am experiencing great sleep too! out like a light once im in bed. as far as family influence Cliff does a lot of the evening cooking and does what he wants but I always have huge salads made- and Ace loves the morning smoothies although she will want toast and butter or pancakes…
I encourage anyone and everyone to start make small changes in their diet and lifestyle! towards a cleaner way to live- less garbage, less waste, less disease and great quality of life! why live any other way really? just because our mother, fathers and ancestors did? For ourselves our children our friends and the earth. Being accountable to one another and being able to be proud of each other! cheers to Spring right around the corner and cheers for reading if you have made it this far!
